Effective Educator Statement
I remember the excitement and curiosity I had when I started attending school. It had nothing to do with the children I got to meet. It had everything to do with my teacher. She used different approaches to meet my learning needs, and this made me excited about learning. However, I did not understand the concepts of different teaching approaches and philosophies to enhance learning at the time. I came to understand these concepts during my teacher training program and, later, teaching experience. As I began my teaching career, I knew I wanted to be the kind of teacher who ignites the learning passion of students and meets their learning goals without any students feeling excluded.
I have since known that effective teachers meet learners’ needs and spark their learning spirit. My journey as a teacher started in 2017 when I became a special education teacher assistant for preschoolers at Head Start. My experiences as a teacher and as a learner have informed my teaching philosophy, and even though it keeps evolving, it has one central principle; learner individuality. For me, learner individuality means using a teaching approach that focuses on learners' individual needs and learning styles. However, this does not mean students should overtly feel different from others. At the end of the day, I want my students to go out into the world feeling confident and capable of interacting with others.
