Black women in the United States (U.S.) are unfairly affected by undesirable maternal health outcomes, such as pregnancy-related deaths, compared to their other racial group counterparts. Black women are likely to receive substandard maternal care because of inherent structural racism in healthcare access and delivery. The Covid-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted African Americans, thus creating new dimensions of healthcare disparities, including the structural inequities in the infant and maternal health. The maternal mortality rate among Black women was 55.3 in every 100,000 live deliveries in 2020, representing about 1800 maternal deaths (Njoku et al., 2023). This is the highest statistic among any racial group in the U.S., and recent years have recorded a rising maternal mortality rate for Black women. Amid this unacceptable backdrop, nurse practice changes and advocacy efforts in maternal care among Black women are justified.
