I did not grow up with interest in nursing. However, I can remember the first time I decided to pursue a career in health care. While in high school, my auntie invited my friend and me to escort her to a conference on healthcare. During this conference, I felt connected with the idea of nursing. The speakers expounded significantly on many external factors that cause disease outside of diagnosing and treating a patient. Listening to the speakers, I felt that nursing was an extensive field with many opportunities to allow an individual to impact the patients and the community.
The healthcare conference made me realize that I desire to work in a profession where I can take care of people and work directly with vulnerable populations. After high school, I pursued a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Child Development and later became a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Becoming an LVN provided the opportunity to work directly with patients while also providing safe, quality, and responsible care. My education aspirations focus on becoming better at connecting with patients and advocating for their needs.
To achieve this, I began a career working with at-risk populations because I felt I could make a significant impact. My first work opportunity was in group home settings, where we worked with both adults and children with different needs.
