Hate Crimes: How to Change Them

Admission Essay Instructions:

Step by Step
1. Identify a problem in a community you belong to. This should be presented quickly and uniquely.
2. Identify the specific change you want to make. What about your community could be changed to solve the problem you identified?
3. Demonstrate how the college would provide the change in the community that you desire.
General TIPS:
1. I made a very basic outline, but please don't use the same words as me; the important thing is show don't tell.
2. Think in thirds. Essentially a three-part prompt—1) what you’d change, 2) why it’s important, and 3) how you’d contribute—so it may be helpful to divide the essay into three parts.
So try allocating roughly 1/3 of your words to define a unique challenge in your community that you want to address, 1/3 to explain its importance, and 1/3 to showcase your leadership and problem-solving skills. The division doesn’t have to be exact, but this approach will help you ensure you’re addressing all this prompt is asking for.
3. VERY IMPORTANT: How are you essential to your community or will you be essential in your university community?
Paragraph 1: In the post-pandemic era, many of my friends, including myself, have been attacked by hate crimes. The data shows a staggering 145% spike in Anti-Asian hate crimes in 2020, yet overall hate crimes fell by 6%. This has raised concerns about minority safety in the communities around us.
Paragraph 2: My friends and I believe that this situation has seriously affected the daily travel of residents. Faced with such fears, it is difficult for many people to resist unilaterally, especially women, children, and the elderly. So we realized that we could create a way for all U.S. citizens, including minorities, to get effective access to the powerful and convenient features of the mobile app when people are hit with hate crimes, robberies, and some other petty criminal offenses.
Paragraph 3: It is complicated to develop such a program with powerful functions. After many investigations and simulations, we finally launched a user-friendly program. I started spreading the program through social media and flyers, and the number of users has grown from less than 50 initially to 3,000 currently.
Fourth paragraph: I'm proud of our program, but it could be better.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the global community to unprecedented changes across different aspects of normal daily life activities. The control measures against the spread of coronavirus, such as keeping a safe distance from each other, led to the disintegration of people in their workplaces and even isolation in some neighborhoods. The untold emotional and psychological sufferings of fear and loss engulfed societies and neighborhoods worldwide, with everyone seeking to find a way back to normalcy. The emotional feeling of fear soon turned to frustration and anger as some individuals started blaming people of Chinese and Asian origin for the emergence and spread of coronavirus and its subsequent catastrophic effects worldwide. My neighborhood was not exempt from the ensuing widespread anti-Asian hate crimes witnessed in different places around the world, as even some of my closest friends and I became victims of the same in the post-pandemic era. Anti-Asian hate crimes spiked by approximately 145% in 2020 against a mere 6% of the total hate crimes recorded for the same year. The anti-Asian hate crimes pose a major security and safety concern for the minority groups within my community.
As a member of the Asian minority group within the community, I share the responsibility of developing and implementing effective interventional measures to address the community’s overall security. The anti-Asian hate crimes negatively affected the daily travel of members of the Asian minority group, thus limitin...
