Hooker, L., Small, R., Humphreys, C., Hegarty, K., & Taft, A. (2015). Applying normalization process theory to understand the implementation of a family violence screening and care model in maternal and child health nursing practice: a mixed-method process evaluation of a randomized controlled trial. Implementation Science, 10(1), 1-13.
Hooker et al. (2015) described the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services in Victoria, Australia, and incorporated it into the nursing practice. This organization focuses on health promotion, especially to the families that have offsprings ages 0-6 years old. The researchers examined the mechanisms and drivers of change in a family. The mechanisms are coherence, cognitive participation, reflexive monitoring, and collective action while the drivers of change include political and economic, individual, and organizational factors. To assess the family of the patients, the researchers utilized the Maternal and child health nurse screening and care for mothers experiencing domestic violence (MOVE) model. This was done to assess how the nurses apply their experience to gain access to information about family violence. Hooker et al. (2015) found that the primary barriers to poor family assessment include the lack of time, privacy, and referral sources.
This information may be used in the nursing practice to assess other factors using the family assessment and intervention model that may affect the well-being of the patients. By knowing these factors, the nurse can formulate other methods on how to handle patient care to improve the patient’s quality of life.
Kaakinen, J. R., Coehlo, D. P., Steele, R., & Robinson, M. (2018). Family health care nursing: Theory, practice, and research. FA Davis, pp. 38-39.Kaakinen et al. (2018) examined the theoretical “Jones Family” through the Family systems theory. Here, Linda had multiple sclerosis when her eldest child was only three months old. The next child was a surprise pregnancy when she was thirty-nine and because of this, she and her husband considered abortion, despite being devout Baptists (Kaakinen et al., 2018, p. 38). Before, Linda was very active and involved in the school activities of her children. When her children were in college, Linda stopped supporting their activities because she was very ill secondary to the relapses in her disease. The nurse must devise a plan that will address the disease of Linda (Kaakinen et al., 2018, p. 39).Family systems theory treats the family as an emotional unit and describes the interrelationship among its members. This article will aid the NP to find the association of behaviors in the family by analyzing the household structure and tasks. Information about family interactions will help the NP in deciding on how he will tackle the welfare of the family holistically (Kaakinen et al., 2018, p.39).It is important to understand the interrelationship between family members since this may have a positive or negative impact on the patient. In the case study, it is evident that the family has a strong bond. However, due to the relapses in Linda’s dise...
