In Biblis Evangelos, J`s journal, Experimental Determination of the Energy Requirements for Cooling and Heating Different Single Story Residential Structures (march 2005), Evangelos observed that houses with concrete slab floors would require more energy for heating and cooling as compared to houses with an insulated wood floor. In addition, houses with slab floors and concrete blocks on the outer walls, would require high energy for cooling and heating. He also observed that houses with plywood siding would require higher amounts of energy for heating and cooling as opposed to houses with brick siding.
By constructing ten experimental single-room unit housing that had similar internal dimensions, attic space, exterior wood floor facing south and window facing north, and with each unit having similarly installed monitoring and control equipment that included: an air conditioning, an electric heater, a temperature and relative humidity continuous chart recorder, an electric power meter and a mercury thermometer the authors would record the thermal data. Data about electricity required for heating during the winter and cooling during the summer were recorded every day. The control units had wood framed walls, wood rafters, fiberglass insulation on the outer walls and the ceiling, plywood subfloor and the underlayment carpet had a fibrous pad. Evangelos` results showed that the units with concrete slab, consumed 12-25% more energy than the control unit. The concrete slab floors and concrete block walls require high energy requirement for heating and cooling. The unit with wood stud walls and plywood sheathing are energy efficient (Evangelos, 2005).
The author`s purpose is to obtain experimentally verified information regarding energy efficiency in the material properties used in residential housing, in order to know behavior patterns of a concrete slab and a wood floor and behaviors in walls structures of different insulating materials. Evangelos positioned himself as a researcher that seeks to know more about the factors influencing energy cost of heating and cooling in residential units aside from solar orientation and architectural design, and he seeks to reach out to prospective home owners and future home builders. The significance of the experiment done helps one recognize the influence of architectural design and the significance of the materials used on the floor, walls and roofs in having insulating properties among other benefits. Historical building methods of light wood framing in single family residential units were sustainable on the design and insulation properties of the material used before the modern use of concrete which is unsustainable (Evangelos, 2005).
