Alexander is a civil rights activist who has authored The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness book describing the new form of racial discrimination in America. She explicates how new systemic racial injustices in the United States has become prevalent in the form of mass incarceration targeting non-white population and minority groups. She claims that mass incarceration of African American population is based on principles of racial control similar to Jim Crow laws. She cites the U.S prison upsurge during the crackdown on narcotics for three decades which resulted in the incarceration of two million people from the previous 300,000. Majority of the new convicts had drug-related convictions who predominantly were African American. I think this book has insightful information articulated by Alexander from the many years she has been a civil rights activist and a member of a racially segregated community. It is also an authoritative and credible source because of how she has discussed racial discrimination in the book which has gone to win many awards for introducing a new perspective to the debate on racism in America.

To Kill A Mockingbird is an authoritative fictional work authored by Lee and set in Alabama during the period of Great Depression. The plot describes the racial injustices perpetrated against the black community by the whites who are protected by the Jim Crow laws. It is apparent that the flawed justice system is structured to oppress the black community. The book is centered on showing how racism tears the societal cohesion and often leads to violence and loss of lives. The author describes the racial injustices in details giving the perspective and environment of how these evils thrive on. Through the themes propagated in this novel, the reader can articulate the plight of the black community and by extension the racially segregated population who are treated as second-class citizens. The book provides compelling though chilling descriptions of injustices perpetrated against blacks in the community described in the novel and offers a good perspective of describing the effects of racism.
