Research Problem
The primary purpose of “The Role of the NICU in Father Involvement, Beliefs, and Confidence: A Follow-Up Qualitative Study by Gesine Hearn, Gina Clarkson, and Matthew Day” was to describe and explore confidence, involvement, and beliefs that fathers with infants admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) had after their babies were discharged home. The exploratory qualitative study uses a longitudinal perspective, and the research problem is stated clearly. Indeed, it applied a three-component theoretical framework, availability, engagement, and taking responsibility, which adhered to the standard procedures of the grounded theory.
Review of the Literature
The study by Hearn, Clarkson, and Day applied both primary and secondary literature while examining the research question. The three-component model was a seminal study. The articles used within the article were not conducted within the last five years. The oldest material used was published in 1987, and the latest in 2019 (Hearn, Clarkson, & Day, 2019). Studies in the literature review are related to the topic of discussion. For instance, Clarkson et al. (2019) clarify that fathers who bathed their infants and provided kangaroo care increased their confidence in other activities, such as changing clothes, feeding, participating in medical decisions, and holding their babies. Specifically, the literature review offers support to the need for a present study that compares the level of involvement for fathers whose infants were in the NICU and those who were not. However, different researchers in the literature review section show positive outcomes for fathers’ involvement in the NICU. Qualitative evidence by Feeley et al. (2013) indicate that direct engagement activities made fathers to feel more involved in their infants’ lives. In contrast, Lamb et al. (1987) assert that fathers’ involvement in the NICU is significantly influenced by various psychological factors, such as public policies, social support, motivation, cultural and community influences, children’s temperament or gender, institutional practices, and self-confidence. Overall, fathers who get involved in their infants’ lives foster these children’s health, shorten their NICU stay, help babies to improve their cognitive development, and sleep behavior.
Research Design
Hearn, Clarkson, and Day used an exploratory qualitative research design that complied with the tenets of the grounded theory. Notably, grounded research enables a researcher to develop an action, process, or a way of interacting with the participants (Houser, 2016). Researchers made nineteen semi-structured telephone interviews of fathers whose infants were admitted in the NICU and discharged for around four to five years ago. Moreover, they received self-report online surveys for eighty participants. Interviews and online surveys are critical in gathering relevant data. An exploratory qualitative method was the most appropriate for this study since it enabled researchers to get first-hand data, which was analyzed to give accurate results.
