Niccolo Machiavelli faced criticism from the church, being branded Satan because of his book The Prince. Machiavelli completed writing the book in 1513, writing it as a gift for Lorenzo Medici, referred to as the Magnificent, who was then the rule of Florence. The political views that Machiavelli expresses in the book are against the doctrines and theology of the church, especially the Beatitudes and the Ten Commandments.
Machiavelli’s aim of writing was to gain the principality that one needs to be brutal. He illustrated this using the example of how Duke Valentino slayed his nobles as a way of maintaining order. According to Machiavelli, Valentino would have lost his power had he not killed his men (Machiavelli, 1993). However, the Bible is strongly against murder as in the sixth commandment, which states one should not murder. Similarly in the Beatitudes, Jesus taught his the crowd that only those who are meek will inherit the earth. Meekness means that one cannot murder someone because they have stood in their way like Machiavelli did. Jesus also taught through the Beatitudes that only peacemakers shall be called sons of God.
