Researchers have increasingly focused on the link between autism spectrum disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but also look into the differences between the two to better understand how they are related. The article highlights the case of Steve Slavin 48 year old father who had experienced depression and anxiety and had OCD signs from a young age Slavin and was diagnosed with autism as an adult, which may explain why he disliked social situations (Yuhas, 2019). It is no surprise as there is an overlap between the two disorders such that these who have autism are at higher risk of having some form of anxiety and those with OCD a may have undiagnosed autism (Yuhas, 2019).
It is likely that there have misdiagnoses since OCD is linked to repetitive behaviors that are common in autism, but statistics show that both conditions tend to co-occur. Thus, research and evidence to determine differences between the two conditions and their interactions is necessary to make correct diagnoses and rely on effective treatments to improve outcomes and this includes cases of people with both OCD and autism (Yuhas, 2019).
