Wal-Mart remains the largest retail outlet in the United States and the world over. The company was founded by Sam Walton back in 1962 and is listed for public trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). By the year 1990, the company’s workers had increased by over tenfold since its inception. All the same, it has witnessed a number of lawsuits to its name. Most notably, Wal-Mart has shown a level of weakness when it comes to employee relations with the management. This has led to a series of adverse effects on overall company image despite the vast scope of its achieved market penetration. In one case, Wal-Mart has been charged with harassing and punishing employees who planned to strike in 2012.
This paper focuses on one instance in 2012 wherein Wal-Mart was reported to have broken the law, particularly in regards to Labor or worker relations. The Article by Amanda Becker indicates that most of the company’s employees are remunerated poverty-level wages in addition to hideous benefits, especially in relation to healthcare.
