Controversies always exist based on the people’s culture and cultural identity. These controversies range from arguments regarding the differences between Blacks and African Americans to the reasons why some Latin Americans do not like being referred to as Hispanics (Wilson 2004). The culture of a society comprises of the language, beliefs, values, norms, customs, beliefs, dressing, diet, and every other aspect of a particular society. People within this learn the cultural components and this make-up the lifestyle of that society. Identity is how individuals or groups perceive and define themselves and is usually linked to the culture of the society (Patron 2007).
Features of ‘Community’
Culture is transmitted from generation to generation through socialization. These cultural attributes form the key features of each society and community. During the socialization, several modifications may be made on the components of culture hence changes may occur overtime with each generation and this result into changes in the community’s features. For Britain, the current features of the community include the presence of an increased number of ethnic minorities living in cities with London, Manchester, and Birmingham being the most dominated cities. In addition, these ethnic minority groups live in larger houses except for the Black Caribbean compared to the White population. Moreover, they have higher levels of unemployment compared to the White population. In the modern community, the white population does not trust the parliament and politicians (Sunak & Rajeswaran 2014). In addition, the modern community is characterized by a new coalition government that aims at reviving the civil society. Finally, the community is characterized by a decreased membership to trade unions, churches, and political parties including women groups. However, membership in modern social movements, NGOs, and other pressure groups has significantly increased. The community today is obsessed with the financial market and financial status of the country (Hilton, McKay, Crowson, & Mouhot 2010).
Significance of Citizenship
In the strict legal sense, citizenship is a status meaning a person has the right to live in a particular country, and the country cannot deny the person entry into the country or deport him/her. The legal status is conferred at birth or by naturalization and is accompanied with the right to vote, to welfare, and to education just to mention a few (Anderson 2011). Citizenship in Britain is significant as it provides the people with the power to participate in politics, for example, voting and civil society engagement including other types of mobilizations that are of a political nature.
