Theme is one of the most important concepts in the study of literature. Examining themes helps us see the ‘big ideas’ that authors are dealing with in their stories. These ideas are often universal in nature, as they apply to books and appeal to audiences that go beyond the work of a single author. In this way themes not only help us identify the ideas that a particular work of literature is addressing, they also help us make connections between different books and genres. In Chapter 10 of A Critical Handbook of Children’s Literature, Lukens explores the concept of theme and identifies some major themes in children’s literature.

In Oscar Wilde’s book called, “The Happy Prince and other tales” is the chapter called “The happy prince.” In the story, Oscar presents many people who were very poor. Wilde addresses the themes of social injustice, the redemptive power of love, and the loss of innocence. This article analyses the implicit and explicit themes used in this story.
Explicit are very easy to fund and identify in a story. In the “The happy prince,” explicit themes include being Judgmental. The towns people in the story start making judgments the moment they realize the Happy Prince is looking depleted. The Happy Prince has given of his beauty and possession, his gold leaf covering, sapphire eyes and ruby from his sword benefit the impoverished people. They are ungrateful instead after being shown care and compassion. They choose to pull the statue down and melt its 'ugliness' away.
Sacrifice. It is sacrificial by giving of both the prince and the swallow in this story. The Happy Prince has gifted his gold covering and even his eyes for the benefits of the poor people he's watched from above. The swallow he has sacrificed is his travel plans and, ultimately, his life, for his new mission alongside the prince.
Love and Compassion. Over the whole life, the Happy Prince lived in a place ''where sorrow is not allowed to enter'' (Wilde, 2013). Now, on his perch above the city, he can see all the heartaches of the people in the town and is compelled to h...
