 Set in modern-day India, Umrigar’s novel exemplifies the power of privilege and wealth. The book, The Space Between Us, illustrates the closeness and the irreconcilable division of the class of two compelling and achingly real women in Bombay. Bhima is a slum resident who has worked as a servant for Sera Dubash, an Indian upper-middle-class Parsi housewife. On the other hand, Sera has lived a tough life surrounded with secret pain, and both, irrespective of their different social class, come together to survive their abusive family relationship.  The women develop an underlying relationship that will never be true due to social class separation.  Bhima is bringing up her granddaughter alone after repeatedly being abused by her insulting husband. Sera takes the initiative to nurse Bhima back to health after she was diagnosed from typhoid and goes ahead to pay college fees for her granddaughter.
