Odysseus faces trial when he escaped from the captivity in Ogygia where he was being held by a nymph who had fallen in love with him. Odysseus was in this land close to 20 years after the Troy war in Greek. Through the help of Hermes, he crafts a ship which he sets sails with it into the ocean. He is on a journey to get to his family and Kingdom of Ithaca. He also rushes to save his son from the shame and danger that the suitors of his loyal wife pose to his son Prince Telemachus. Apart from family, his other goal is to reclaim his kingdom. The nymph tells him that if he could just see the dangers at sea he would stay and guide the place. With these words she allows him to go.
His journey is short-lived when his enemy the god of the sea creates a storm and wrecks his ships. The enmity of the god of the sea rises from the case when the god of Ithaca blinded his son. But with the help of Athena the daughter of Zeus and the nymph he safely arrives at the island of Scheria where the Phaeacians live and hides himself under lives and falls asleep for a long time. The princess of the land Nausicaa leads him to the palace where he narrates the trials of his journey until he arrives at the nymph’s cave.
He starts with explaining how he journeyed from the troy back when most of his crew members lost their lives, how Zeus god of Olympus punished the remaining survivors through a north wind storm until he came across the lotus-eaters. The lotus- eaters are a group of people living in Southern Europe the habitat of the plant lotus. These make a sweet juice from the plant that a person lazy, dreamy and also erases once memories. This evidenced when Odysseus says that upon arriving in that land for water together with his crew, he picks up 3 men and goes with them to find out how the inhabitants of the place. The three, stumble upon two Lotus-eaters who offer the three men the juice from there, he had to carry them by chains back to ship as they didn’t want to go back home but stay among these people. He also warned the crew not to drink the sweetened water in case they don’t want to lose their hope for getting home.
The other trial was when he confronted the cyclops called Polyphemus. Apart from being a one eyed giant he is the son of the god of the sea, Poseidon. Odysseus curiosity, made him venture into the cave of this one-eyed guy who has a negative purpose that any hero must overcome in order to reach home. Without pity he took two of the members and made a meal out of them even after Odysseus had told him that they were just passing by and for the fear of Zeus, god of Mount Olympus to let them go. He thought of stabbing him but froze on that thought as the giants’ body could not allow them to pass through.
His men and him, created a pole from twenty oars, smoothened it and waited for Polyphemus to return in the night from herding his flocks, After the giant had slept, he as the captain or leader and four other soldiers stabbed the pole into the giants’ eye making him go blind. Polyphemus blocked the doorway but Odysseus rummaged through ideas and got one. He takes three sheep ties together with willows and ties each man so that they are secured left and rig...
