Rachel’s Letters Review
Rachel Corrie was an American human rights worker, working abroad in the Gaza Strip, Palestine in 2003. Before her death, she sent several letters to her friends and family back in the USA, explaining to them why she was risking her life in a war filled zone. In her first letter dated February 7, 2003, Rachel explains the current state in Palestine, while contrasting it with a picture of her life back in Olympia, USA (Corrie 2). In Palestine, there are tanks in the streets, with soldiers constantly surveying them. The author explains how the 8-year old children view life, arguing that they also know life outside their country is more peaceful. Additionally, she points out the humanitarian crisis facing the people in the area such as lack of adequate water. The problem grew bigger after the Israel army destroyed the wells providing water for the Rafah region. Other issues include a nightly curfew, limiting movement past 10 pm, lack of access to news from the outside world, and constant fear of the shootings. Lastly, the author expresses gratitude for the peaceful demonstrations in support of the refugees in the areas.
