I. The three most important sociological points Mr. Contreras makes in the book are:
(20 points maximum)
1 One sociological point that Randol Contreras makes is about gender roles. In the story, the drug dealers are mostly men who use the money to display masculinity and allowing them to get the women they want. Similarly, the drug dealers use women to make a trap for other drug dealers they want to steal from or cause harm. For example, in the beginning of the book, Gus uses Melissa as a trap to steal from another drug dealer (Contreras, 2013). Women are viewed as sex objects to be used by the drug dealers.
2 Another sociological point that Contreras makes in the book is about violence. Contreras explains that the drug dealers like Pablo and Gus resulted to violence after the decline of the crack market. The dealers realized they needed to maintain their flashy and expensive lifestyle but it was impossible with the decline of the market. Drug dealers like Gus resulted in targeting other drug dealers to steal their money or drugs (Contreras, 2013). They use violence such as beating, burning, and maiming their victims, who often never report the crimes because they are involved in illegal deals.
3 Contreras also makes a point about emotional bonds. The book shows that the drug dealers that Contreras collaborated do have emotional bonds to those they consider family. For example, Gus and Pablo protect Contreras as a brother or cousin and will not let anyone hurt him (Contreras, 2013). In their personal lives, Contreras explores the emotional aspects of the dealers. For example, Pablo had a disagreement with Geraldo and set him up for a robbery but keeps postponing because he does not want to hurt Geraldo’s wife or children.
