Jobs vary substantially based on the tasks and decision-making authority scope. Making decisions as managers in corporations consumes large amount of time. Therefore, partitioning tasks and decision rights is important because the other people have important information about the real sensitive situation on the ground compared to managers. This has become a common trend as firms are geared towards decentralization due to increased global competition and technological changes. Initially, the centralized decision system included decisions made by individuals at the top, which has not been effective compared to a decentralized system where many people make organizational vital decisions especially at lower levels using local knowledge effectively. Firms assign decision right to committees or teams of employees rather than specific individuals (Brickley, Smith & Zimmerman, 2009).

In one of the case study, Medford University is facing financial pressure as it currently spends $ 100million annually on fringe benefits and also faces large future payment of medical benefits for retirees. The president has appointed a task force consisting of faculty and staff from various departments. This is a move being witnessed in big corporations as decision rights are assigned to teams or committees compared to specific individuals. The president appointed a task force to consider the issue of fringe benefits compared to the university human resource department to design a plan. This is an effective approach for future sustainability of the plan. The task force is important because individuals with the relevant knowledge share information among themselves, generating new ideas. Decisions are made through consensus after discussion as this reduces employee’s concerns about the effects of the decision-making process. By initiating a task force, it increases employee buying-in in that employees will be committed to the implementation process based on their own decisions that they have recommended (Brickley, Smith & Zimmerman, 2009).
