Differentiation is an important component of a lesson plan, because it guides the teacher in how to meet the diverse needs of all students during instruction. The planning process will help the teacher determine when and how to differentiate. It is critical for teachers to observe or review academic data to appropriately differentiate for their students. Sometimes, there can be great discrepancies between formative and summative data with individual students. Students may demonstrate mastery of concepts on formative assessments, but do not demonstrate mastery with bringing it all together in a summative assessment.
Differentiation includes a full spectrum of accommodations and modifications, in order to enrich or remediate to meet the needs of the diverse students. Gifted and high achieving students are often overlooked when it comes to differentiation, but are no less important than the student who needs intervention. As part of the planning process, it is important to consider enriching the learning experiences for gifted and high achieving students. Enrichment does not mean more work; it means creating opportunities for students to develop deeper levels of understanding.

Most students strive for perfection in their tasks, actions, and assessments. This could be due to the pressure they feel due to the academic expectations. Perfectionism is the tendency to set unrealistically high-performance standards that can only result in one of two outcomes: success or failure (Alodat et al., 2020). Chen is a high school student who is an underachieving perfectionist. Chen enjoys learning but dislikes being judged or evaluated. The teachers, parents, and Chen should work collaboratively to overcome his underachieving perfectionism.
Given Chen’s position, he must receive assistance in overcoming his underachievement perfectionism in class. The teacher, in collaboration with Chen, should set realistic goals. Children like Chen, who struggle with underachievement perfectionism, benefit from realistic goals emphasizing progress over perfection. Suggest that he set concrete goals that represent genuine progress from where he currently is. Furthermore, the teacher should emphasize that no one is perfect. Students can only have a healthy relationship with their flaws and recognize that this is part of what makes us all unique if they understand what is going on behind the scenes with others and develop skills such as self-compassion (Mabrouk, 2019).
Furthermore, the teacher should foster supportive relationships. Positive comments from the teacher were found to affect how students perceived themselves as learners positively. Trust is also required for students to follow the teacher’s advice. Consistency and care will aid in the development of trust and encourage the student to open up. Finally, the teacher should value effort and behavior more than results. Students must be reminded that their academic journey takes precedence over their grades. The teacher should acknowledge that they put in much effort to achieve this (Mabrouk, 2019).
It is also critical to involve Chen in the class, so some strategies are provided here. The use of bibliotherapy is effective (Altunbay, 2018). Books with characters who struggle and make mistakes can be used by teachers. Through the character’s failure, the students will learn that failure is a part of life and it is natural. Moreover, through the character’s success, the students will learn that they can succeed just like the characters. The teacher can also use the chunking strategy for longer assignments. Prolonged or difficult assignments can be overwhelming for the perfectionist. Divide the tasks into chunks to reduce the student’s uneasiness (Umarkulova, 2021). No single strategy works for all underachieving perfectionists, but counseling and instructional interventions give the best outcomes (Siegle, 2018).
Formative assessments are needed to determine the student’s academic progress and achievement. The formative assessments that can monitor Chen’s progress are exit slips and portfolio.
