Supporting the academic progress of a student is essential in developing students and can be achieved by developing programs that increase access to student services, changing student attitudes towards learning, increasing individual contacts and being present in student wellbeing and welfare. Through these programs and activities, an institution can strongly support a student's welfare in school. Advising these students about their career, financial and emotional wellbeing is a holistic approach that professionals can engage in to help undecided students. Advising in this case was involved in San Jacinto College as a positive project aimed towards assisting students in their academic and career goals (Williamson, L.V. Goosen 2014). The project saw the school ban late register of courses or units and training of staff ways to advise students on matters affecting them.
The program just like any other project faced obstacles or challenges that had to be addressed by the management. One of the obstacles arose when the number of contact points per term was too much for the students that the management had to change the contact point to 3 per term(Williamson, L.V. Goosen 2014) . The first chosen contact points were overwhelming to the staff who dealt with student services ultimately proving to be unnecessary. Contacts points before adjustments were six per term which proved futile and not helpful but a burden to the student services staff hence leading to reshuffle. Another matter fueling this was the inability to create a schedule plan for the students (Williamson, L.V. Goosen 2014). The other obstacle was the student self-select service proved to make it difficult for evaluation because of the high number of population in the college which was over thirty thousand students at the time.
Challenges experienced during program evaluation can lead to positive adjustments to the student success project. Students' disappearing from classes during the first two weeks of classes is an example of a challenge faced during the program evaluation (Williamson, L.V. Goosen 2014). This impacts the student success as the laid out programs for each week will be delayed making it hard for the staff giving advice to students to lose interest. Consequently, it will lead to the installment of tough measures and leadership approaches to deal with this problem and see to it that it does not escalate. The student ...
