Bryan Case Scenario
Bryan is a new RPN graduate working full-time on a busy medical unit at Conestoga General Hospital. He has been an employee at the hospital for two months. He enjoys his nursing career and his medical patients. Bryan is well respected by the nurses on the unit and the other members of the interdisciplinary team on this unit. Bryan has created a Facebook account and is eager to share his photos, life experiences, travels and opinions on social media.
You are Bryan's team leader on this unit and Bryan has asked you to advise him on using Facebook in a responsible, professional manner. What constitutes a social media-based breach of patient confidentiality and privacy
By sharing information on social media, nurses may accidentally break confidentiality or privacy. Talking to patients and families that may be traced back to them, referring to patients in a disrespectful or insulting manner, or sharing videos or photographs of doctors are all instances of inappropriate behavior (Lefebvre et al., 2020). Privacy is breached in the patient's best interests or the community if required by law or when the client approves the disclosure. Patient consent to personal information is not necessary unless there is a legal obligation or in the public's interest.
