Diabetes is an increasing concern not only in the United States but on a global scale. It is a disease that affects the body's ability to produce insulin which is a necessary hormone for converting energy sources needed by the body. The cause of diabetes is currently unknown; however, the environment and an individual's genetic makeup have been found to be contributing factors.
Reflect on your role as a nurse in promoting patient health and in pharmacology, then respond to the following:
• A patient is concerned about their family history of diabetes and asks you when individuals with diabetes might be treated with diet and when would they need to take medication.How would you respond?
• How would your response differ if the patient was a child who was pre-diabetic?

Among the world’s most costly and chronic diseases, diabetes has proved to be more burdensome globally. Complications that result from this disease are a significant cause of damage or failure of some organs in the body and are also the source of morbidity and mortality. Patients are advised to take preventive measures that include engaging in healthy behaviors (diet weight adjustments, increased engagement in physical activities, limitation of smoking) and pharmacological therapies.
