1. How do Senor Flores, Senora Flores and Dr. Jean view this situation from totally different perspectives?
The health of the child is paramount to the parent and whenever the child is unwell the parent can go to any lengths to pursue good health. This includes taking the wrong action or misguided step to check if works on the child. The fact is those who practice traditional practices of medicine and those who believe in contemporary practice have numerous arguments on what is effective (Allmond & Tanner, 1999). However, the issue of health does not require one to delay on any issue and must always be certain and informed on the decision taken to avoid regrets.
Alejandro’s case is a case of a chronic illness (asthma) that continues to disturb many due to the symptoms and nature of the disease. For Sr Flores and Senora Flores taking the child to an espiritista was a move of desperation and a misguided advice. As a parent the perspective is for the child to get well and it doesn’t matter what it takes. In fact, he goes back to his traditions and beliefs and gets advice that herbal tea and prayers would heal the child (Allmond & Tanner, 1999). He also sees as a relief from the asthma action plan and the numerous medications but stills ignores the dangers of the child’s health worsening.
On the other hand the doctor sees it as mere ignorance and a dangerous and informed move. By believing in untested, unscientific and unorthodox methods to cure a chronic illness can only be explained as a hazard to the child (Allmond & Tanner, 1999). The asthma action plan given to the child is a comprehensive care for the patient that works to protect him or her from emergency cases. Indeed, for the doctor the patient should be able to accept their health condition as it is the first step to the healing process. For the parents helping the child accept and understand the illness will contribute to the well being of the child and better health. The fact that the parents move to a house that has air conditioning is a commitment to the child’s health; however it is doubted since they are not able to do away with the family dogs. Dogs are disastrous to people with asthma and would be better to avoid such situations for the child. Also the reluctance with the parent to bring the child to hospital for six months is disastrous and they only show up when the patient is worse.
