Chi Test for association between variables
This is a chi square hypothesis testing. It is meant to test the independence of the attributes. This test discloses whether there is a relationship between two or more attributes or not.
The following steps show the procedure of hypothesis testing.
The null and alternative hypothesis is set as follows.
H0: No association exists between the attributes
H1: An association exists between the attributes
Under H0 the expected frequency E corresponding to each cell in the contingency table is found by using the formula
E=(R*C)/n.
R is the row total, C is the column total and n is the sample size.
3. based upon the observed values and the corresponding frequencies expected the X² statistic is obtained using the formula.
X²=‑ (O-E) ²/E.
The characteristic of this distribution are defined by the number of degrees of freedom which is given by
d.f=(r-1) (c-1) r is the number of rows and c is the number of columns corresponding to the chosen significance level. The critical value is found from the chi square table
5. The calculated value of the chi square is compared with the tabulated value. If the computed value is greater than the tabulated value the null hypothesis is rejected. Otherwise we accept it Holmes & Dines 2010.
