MIT Case Study
Organizational leaders are consistently subjected to competing demands that translate to ethical dilemmas. As a manager, it is important to create a balance between scarce resources and the respective organizational needs. In the long-term, managers rely on their personal experiences and ethical obligations to make the right decisions. That, however, has not inhibited managers from indulging in multiple ethical challenges. This paper explores Rafael Reif’s case at MIT. The case is valuable to understanding ethical issues in organizational settings on the basis of their onsets, impact, and the affected stakeholders.
Case Overview
The case explores Rafael Reif’s ethical predicament as the president of MIT. Reif became the president of MIT in 2012 and his reign has been characterized by success. Specifically, the institution has expanded its financial stability, explored more scientific constancy, and ventured in arts effectively. Such structural and operational advancements require huge financial investments. Reif explored every avenue to achieve the financial services required to complete the project. Amidst doing so, he sought the financial help of Jeffrey Epstein, an individual who committed suicide in jail after having been incarcerated for sex trafficking of minors. He is also accused to have sought financial help from Saudi Prince who was accused of killing a journalist. At the very least, the actions by Reif could ruin the reputation of the institution, Reif’s reputation, and that of other stakeholders.
The Problem
The problem is on Reif’s refusal to accept his mistakes and resign from the position of the presidency. Reif believes that he may have made some mistakes. However, the mistakes can be corrected while he is still the president. Other stakeholders believe that his persistence to be the president ruins the reputation of the institution.
The Stakeholders
There are multiple stakeholder groups that are following on the presented ethical issue. Primary among the stakeholders are MIT’s leadership and management who are divided on the right decision to take. There are also lecturers some of whom believe that Reif is innocent while others insist that Reif’s association with criminals for financial aids is consistent. The lecturers and professors need a stable working environment. They, however, believe in ethical avenues of gaining resources. There are students who also need the reputation of their university to stay intact. All the above stakeholders are integral to the outcomes of the case.
Ethical Perspectives
Reif violated various ethical perspectives. First is poor alignment (Valentine, 2014). His actions are not aligned with the institution’s ethical obligations. Also, he did not engage stakeholders in a dialogue to tabulate the best avenues to seek the funds for the projects. Reif was also not transparent bearing the fact that he kept hi...
