The organization that I will be choosing for this project would be a hospital. Due to the crucial role of hospitals and other healthcare providers in ensuring the health and well-being of their patients, knowledge management is an important part of the overall systems that should be built. However, in applying the SECI model for this organization, one must first understand that hospitals built their knowledge, expertise, and protocols through the help of ‘Evidence-based Practice’ (EBP). Accordingly, the preference of healthcare settings in the application of the EBP model is where the SECI process could be found.
First, since EBP requires the use of credible and up-to-date information about the various aspects of the healthcare setting (i.e., management, healthcare provision, accounting, etc.), then this means that the SECI model could should start from the internalization stage. Thus, in establishing a knowledge creating organization in the healthcare setting, I would make sure that any ‘interventions’ that nurse managers would utilize should be based on recent, peer-reviewed, and accurate information. The management must make sure that these ‘external knowledge’ in the form of research data, would be the foundation of any interventions that they would like to apply in the hospital.
Second, after the internalization stage, this organization would then proceed towards socialization. Socialization is defined as the process whereby the actors create and share tacit knowledge through experience. Similarly, the EBP process requires that research findings must be applied and tested in the specific healthcare setting before it is considered as effective. This means that socialization happens the nurses apply and experience whether a particular finding is effective in their setting first hand. Accordingly, as the one who is tasked to establish the knowledge-creation organization, I would require our nurse managers to follow the EBP process whereby research knowledge is tested through testing (i.e., use of experimental and control groups) and experiencing by the nurses themselves.
Subsequently, the third part of the process is the use of externalization. In the SECI model externalization refers to use of dialogue and reflection with the purpose of articulating tacit information. It is through this process whereby knowledge is created by looking at the effectiveness or reasons for ineffectiveness of a particular solution. Going back to the EBP model, it could be seen that externalization happens as the nurse manager reflects on the results of interventions and discuss them with their colleagues and the management itself. In other words, externalization happens by reflecting and discussing on the results of the intervention utilized.
Finally, the last process is combination. It is through this process whereby knowledge collected and reflected could be revised, integrated, and applied to the specific hospital setting. In the...
