The physical environment in Somalia helps to make Al-Shabaab transnational because of the following reasons:
Poorly governed land and porous borders in the region: Somalia is an extensive country with vast ungoverned and poorly governed spaces and porous borders due to political instability and unstable government. The poorly governed land and porous borders facilitated the formation of the radical terrorist group Al-Shabaab (Hansen, 2013).
Access to the sea and piracy: Somalia has extensive coastline which is 3,025 kilometers long; Al-Shabaab has connections with pirates who operate off this vast coast line.
Proximity to the Arab Peninsula: at the horn of Africa, Somalia is close to the Arab peninsula and Al-Shabaab have exploited Yemen’s gradual collapse into near-anarchy to further its transnational terrorism activities.
Training Camps in other countries: although the group has its main training camps near Kismayo in southern part of the country, it maintains other training camps in a number of countries including Pakistan, Yemen, Sudan and Afghanistan (Fergusson, 2012).
