New Zealand recognizes the need for giving men and women equal rights and opportunities of contributing to and benefiting from development. According to Casey, Skibnes, & Pringle (2011, p. 623), policymakers and the government acknowledge that empowerment of women and girls is essential in the achievement of other set objectives. For that reason, they have mainstreamed gender on international development assistance program and continue to implement strategies of addressing domestic violence and other forms of mistreatment of women and girls. Arguably, the eradication of retrogressive cultural practices, such as female genital mutilation and forced marriages is an effective way of empowering girls and women alike.
