One of the emotions or key memories that individuals will recall when viewing this artwork is the feeling of being alone in the house as a youngster while there is a lightning storm outside. Or on those occasions when the power goes out, and nobody is home, you get the sense that you're in the middle of a pitch-black hole because you can't see anything. Everyone has a different idea of loneliness and darkness, which is understandable given that the girl in "The Girl by the Window" also feels alone in the dark with only the light from outside the window.
By examining the artist's intended meaning in his artwork, it is clear that the girl in the window is peering into the unknown environment outside her home or room. Darkness is always associated with being frightful and depressing because it is the color of the sky at night and also the incorporation of evil entities. Although it's true that each person's interpretation of a piece of art will be different, it's safe to state that this painting's meaning will come under the umbrella of gloom.
