The world is full of cultural and racial discrimination. For a long time, culture determines the roles of a man and a woman in society. The Indians and Africans still hold on to many of their cultural demands. Contemporary society unconsciously still discriminate gender, depending on societal roles. Sadly, women are the most affected. There are roles that men should not engage in the same as women. However, the status quo is changing as affected gender are pushing on against all odds to achieve their life goals. This paper analyzes the push for change in how society profiles the identity of people culturally and socially in the movies Devines and Bend It Like Beckham.
Devines is a 2016 film set in an urban scenario. It stars the lives of a girls' robbery gang that Rebecca leads whose members include Dounia and Maimouna. The film describes a turn of events in the societal status quo. Robbery and shoplifting have been a vice in the society that is related to men. Dounia and the gang are hungry for wealth, and they decide to use robbery as a short cut to getting the wealth. Traditionally, men are tasked to accumulate wealth for families in all the cultures globally. But Dounia is hungry for the wealth. She is naive, but the thought of getting richer captures the best of her, and she indulges in illegal means to earn money ("Goddess Watch Online [Hu Ge Live] Divines Watch Online Online Watch | Hu Ge Live-Newest, Most Complete, Clearest!", 2016). Dounia, in this film, is breaking free from the traditional social, conservative beliefs that men commit every crime. Instead, she and her friend Maimouna defy the identities and adopt a masculine way of life.
The film is symbolic of the changing gender identities (Vogt, 2017). Before Rebecca recruits Dounia, she provokes a dancer, Djugui, in the dance theatre by spitting on his face and saves his life when he was chasing her. The incident would have changed Djugui's life through injuries, but Dounia saved him. This is an indication that women can do the work dedicated to men socially and culturally. Culture designates men to be the saviours of generation against what Dounia did to save Djugui. The film introduces an exciting twist by using female protagonists that push the main themes in the movie. This is an interesting twist that indicates a shift in the traditional identities of male-dominated societies.
The film Bend It Like Beckham is a 2002 film that stars Jess. She is of an Indian origin, and she faces discrimination from her family over her interest in playing football ("W...
