Realism in video games has grown over time. They represent the real issues that affect us daily, highlighting plights, high and lows of life. We often play what we like because we have some connection with it in terms of experience and other connections. The technology of video games has taken over the lives of youths who are addicted to them. Football fans play football video games like FIFA games, some like racing games, while others opt for violent games. In any case, people choose what interests them. This essay analyzes realism in video games.
Dilemmas often face us in life between following rules or breaking them to attend to a situation at stake. Sometimes, we have to do something good, even if it means breaking the laws, to feel good and satisfy our ego. In the game, a son takes care of his sick father, and you have to choose to help him or ignore him. The choices you have in such a situation are many, depending on your conscience and priorities (SWT: This War of Mine, 2014). You might not have the medicine to help, or maybe you have it, but you need it for yourself. Therefore, this game is about the journey and not the destination. The outcome of any game is losing or winning, and everybody likes to win. These reflect on the hardships the dilemmas we face in our real lives. Most times, the choices we make have long-term effects because they positively or negatively affect our conscience. Wark (2009) believes that life is like a game that we play and have to win or lose and learn a lesson. This is why games are perfect learning opportunities. We often relate to what is going on in the films with what is going on in our lives. In The Gamer, Wark (2009) says that people are glued to their screens playing and being very careful not to make a mistake and mess up their game plan. In the same way in life, we are often keen to make the right choices and stick to what is best for us. This is why people often get a connection from the game to the real world.
Developers of these games often have a lesson to teach the public. As earlier stated, the game's ultimate goal in the game is to win, but it is often a challenging journey before reaching the point of winning. Losing is also a valid choice at the end of every game (Bogost, 2008). However, the real deal is in the choices the player chooses while playing. This is determined by role-playing in the game.
