Virtual Local Area Network
The Virtual LAN (VLAN) model enhances the Local Area Network (LAN) interconnections. According to Feit (2000), the concept of VLAN arose to control the traffic flow in the physical LAN. Its development emerged from the security concern of flooding that encumbered the operations of the LAN. The tracking of communication between users is particularly impractical among physically dispersed users. The VLAN as a concept segments the LAN into manageable sizes and can also allow for physical dispersion. As a result, similar to LAN, the VLAN comprises computer systems in a workgroup that communicate with each other (Feit, 2000). The VLAN primarily serves the LAN by minimizing the overall traffic. Sealing the traffics between the systems within their respective Virtual LANs devolves and eases the overall traffic control. Another merit of the implementation of the VLAN is improved security as a result of mitigating flooding.
