Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices
There are various methods and tools that can be used to improve the accessibility of curriculum for students with disabilities. Augmentative and alternative communication devices as well as other assistive technologies are often used for this purpose. It is important for teachers to understand the options that are available, and that they advocate for students to be provided with the best possible tools to assist them.
Part 1: Measurement Data Lesson Plan
Select a 1-5 grade level, a corresponding Arizona or other state standard based on the Measurement and Data domain, and a group of 3-4 students from the “Class Profile” who would benefit from the use of augmentative and/or alternative communication devices or other forms of assistive technology.
With your identified learning target and small group in mind, complete a lesson plan, using the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” that specifies applicable assistive technology and includes differentiated activities to facilitate students making measurement comparisons, and
Using models of measuring units; or
Using measuring instruments; or
Representing and interpreting the data.
Part 2: Communication Device Rationale
In addition to your completed lesson plan, justify your augmentative and/or alternative communication devices or other forms of assistive technology choices in a 250-500 word rationale.
Support your choices with 2-3 scholarly resources.
Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.

Instructional Plan Title:
Measure Up: Exploring Length Units Through Hands-On Activities
Lesson Summary and Focus:
This lesson aims to help students in grades 1-2 express the length of an object as a whole number of length units by laying multiple copies of a shorter object end to end. Through interactive and tactile activities, students will gain a solid understanding of measurement and the concept of units, which is essential for mathematical development (Muñoz et al., 2022).
Classroom and Student Factors/Grouping:
Two male students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and fall under Tier 3 Response to Intervention (RTI), indicating they require specialized support. Additionally, there is a female student who utilizes hearing aids and would greatly benefit from the incorporation of an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device.
National/State Learning Standards:
Standard: 3.MD.2 - Measure and Estimate Lengths in Standard Units (Arizona Department of Education, 2016).
Standard: 3.MD.4 - Generate Measurement Data (Arizona Department of Education, 2016).
Specific Learning Target(s)/Objectives:
Given a set of measurement comparisons and AACD support materials, the student will correctly communicate measurement comparisons for at least four different scenarios.
Given various measurement tasks, including the use of AACD and traditional measuring instruments, the student will independently and accurately measure and compare lengths.
Given classroom discussions and collaborative measurement activities, with AACD support, the student will actively participate, contributing both verbally and non-verbally to the activities.
Academic Language
Vocabulary
* Measure: Explain that "measure" means to find the size, length, or amount of something. Provide examples of measuring in everyday life, like measuring ingredients for a recipe.
* Compare: Define "compare" as looking at two or more things to see how they are the same or different. Use visual aids and real-world objects to demonstrate comparisons.
* Unit: Describe a "unit" as a standard quantity used for measuring. Show examples of units such as inches, centimeters, and feet.
* Communication: Explain that "communication" is the process of sharing information or thoughts. Discuss different ways people communicate, including speech and alternative methods like AACD.
Teaching Aids
Visual Aids: Use visual aids such as diagrams, pictures, and charts to illustrate concepts and vocabulary.
Hands-On Activities: Engage students in hands-on activities where they directly interact with measuring units and objects to grasp the meaning of terms like "measure" and "length."(Arizona's Common Core Standards, 2012).
Discussion and Reflection: Encourage classroom discussions, asking students to describe their understanding of new terms like "communication" and "inches." Encourage reflection by asking students to relate these terms to their daily lives.
Vocabulary Reinforcement: Implement vocabulary reinfo...
