A Type I error occurs when the researcher rejects the null hypothesis despite it being true, providing a false-positive result. On the other hand, a Type II error occurs when the researcher fails to reject the null hypothesis when the alternative hypothesis is true, providing a false-negative result (El-gohary, 2019). Both these errors may significantly affect the overall results if committed during the statistical testing procedures. More so, in real life, each type of error could have a substantial impact since wrongful assumptions are made.
An instance where a Type I error may be serious involves giving a "guilty" verdict to a person in trial for a major crime such as murder, where the null hypothesis represents a "not guilty" verdict.
