Healthcare is increasingly evolving, leading to the presentation of legislative changes every year. Senator Pan noted that racism limits California's capacity to become a healthy state, thus making racism a public health crisis (Boerger, 2020). The SB-17 Office of Racial Equity bill is being considered in California to affirm racism as a public health crisis. This legislation mainly drives lawmakers to examine whether policies play a critical role in sustaining or dismantling racist systems. The bill will establish an Office of Racial Equity within California – a self-governing public organization not affiliated with a department or an agency, overseen by the Racial Equity Advisory and Accountability Council. The legislation would authorize the council to employ an executive director tasked with organizing, administering, and managing office operations. In addition, the bill will task the office with analyzing, coordinating, developing, assessing, and recommending approaches for promoting racial equity across state departments, agencies, and the Governor's office (California Legislative Information, 2020).
