Head of Household
Leadership in the African American home is split into two; some families are male-headed while others are female-headed. The female-headed homes are a bi-product of slavery. During slavery, the African American man was not the head of the family; he was the white man's property. Women, on the other hand, played a double role of working for the white man alongside her male counterpart and had the additional responsibility of caring and raising the children. Post slavery, some African American families have the dominant force of the family as the woman (Cherry, 2020).
Gender Roles
Under the system of slavery, the African American man role was utterly obliterated. He was powerless and couldn't defend his wife and children, particularly when they were being beaten or sexually abused by the white overseer. To date, the African American man still strives to find his place in the family. Women, on the other hand, their most significant role is to take care of the home and children. African American women have also taken the task of providing in the finances (Cherry, 2020).
Goals and Priorities
In African American cultures, the goals are agreed on at the family level. However, this is not always the case since each family is unique and dynamic. Male decisions are given high priority as opposed to the females. (Purnell, 2019).
Developmental Tasks
Children and adolescents in the African American community are brought up in a community of similar race together. This communal life helps children and adolescents to develop healthily because of the exposure they have to their peers and positive role models (Purnell, 2019).
Roles of Aged
The aged in the African American community had a vital role in passing on wisdom from one generation to another. They helped the young ones to know the depths of their roots and cultivate belief in them. They also told tales of the slavery days and how they and their ancestors had to struggle for them to enjoy their current independence (Jones, 2020).
Extended Family
African American families are known for the close ties they have between their families and extended family. Holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas bring families close together, and they get to bond. The impact of the extended family on the nuclear family is that it brings a sense of belonging and community (Cherry, 2020).
Social Status
Individual and family social status in the African American community is quite vast. The African American community has both extremes and the middle class as well. There are some African Americans who are extremely rich and those that are extremely poor. Both extremes characterize African American culture (Jones, 2020).
Alternative Lifestyles
In the African American culture, it is acceptable to have children out of wedlock and to live together when not married (Cherry, 2020). Single parenting is a choice that is acceptable in the African American culture but is looked down upon. Gay or Lesbian relationships are forbidden in the culture.
