Developmental Stages Matrix
According to Harder 2002, the personality traits that each one of us has in life depend on each exposure. This helps us to be optimistic or pessimistic in life. It helps us to be dependent in one time and independent in other. It makes us be emotional or unemotional; it forms us to be aggressive or passive in life. These traits are mostly inborn while others are acquired during our interaction with the environment as it is postulated by Erik Erikson development theories.
Early childhood (18 months to 3years)
This is the stage where the child starts mastering skills. Some of these skills are walking, feeding talking as well as finer motor development. The child also learns toilet training skills. The child is capable at this stage to build up self-esteem as they gain control of their bodies by acquiring new skills. The child is also capable of distinguishing right and wrong. According to Erickson, the child develops “Terrible Two” skill. This is ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ skill that enables the child to develop important skills of will (Harder, 2002).
At this stage, the child is very vulnerable of low esteem if down graded in development of the skills. There socially, they should be handled with great care.
Middle adulthood (35 to 55 years)
According to Erikson, this is a stage when we became in charge. He observed that people at this stage are preoccupied with creative work and solving issues that surround their families.
It is at this stage when one is capable of perpetuating culture and ensuring that the values of the community are transmitted through the generation. This generation works to ensure that they sustain their children and ensure good environment for themselves. This generation gets energy though care for others and the society.
