Individuals can be infected with various dangerous diseases in varying ways. Some pathogenic organisms such as those that cause malaria are passed by animal vectors while others are passed via contaminated food. Still, for example, those responsible for causing Ebola are passed via person to person contact (Shors, 2011). With the advent of Ebola in West Africa and its current penetration into the United States, the Federal state governments in different states have created emergency preparedness response plans. These involve quarantine and isolation quarantine and isolation to prevent spreading of the disease as recommended by the CDC. The use of involuntary quarantine and isolation for health workers is unscientific and dangerous.
However, it is with good reason that Americans are highly confused about the risks that Ebola possess. This is because it is a frightening disease whose perception has been worsened by dueling theories regarding the best approach to handle people coming from Ebola prone areas (NYT Editorial Board, 2014). Eighty-five percent of the democrats think quarantines should be enforced supported by 90% of the Tea Party against 65% of the democrats oppose quarantine and supported by 60% of the independents (Dann, 2014). The only apparent reason for the support of this involuntary isolation especially for the health workers is the risk that these individuals pose to the larger American population. It is also a strategy to limit the potential EVD transmission of the disease for healthcare workers that have handled Ebola patients
This approach and strategy is dangerous, unscientific, and a violation of the human rights. The quarantine and isolation imposition deters health workers from volunteering to go fight the virus in its country of origin (NYT Editorial Board, 2014). For example, the nongovernmental organization Doctors Without Borders has been on the frontline in battling the disease in West Africa has decided to reduce the number of individuals it sends for visits and the length of time. This is to avoid the risk of being quarantined (NYT Editorial Board, 2014).
In addition, quarantines have minimal effects in stopping the spread of Ebola. Ebola provides health workers with a huge advantage in that the disease becomes known before it can become contagious. Patients with the disease can only spread the disease after they develop certain symptoms such as fever/diarrhea. The fears that health workers would be outside while feeling sick and end up infecting other people are unfounded (Kliff, 2014).
