Differences between Vertical, Horizontal, and Diversified Expansion In the first place, vertical growth is the activities of an organization that are extended upstream or downwards in the value chain. In the healthcare industry, it can mean starting a retail pharmacy chain of its own, forward integration, or manufacturing its own medicine, also called reverse innovation. On the other hand, horizontal expansion is the approach also known as parallel growth, and it involves growing at the same level of the value chain, usually through takeovers or merging with associated businesses (Ginter et al., 2018).
