Medical apps have multiple benefits, including monitoring patient health, saving costs, and time and patient management. This paper discusses mobile health apps, their history and integration into the healthcare system, and their benefits in patient care and organizations.
Mobile health apps are software or programs on users' mobile devices that process and store health-related information. The FDA defines a health app as a mobile app that includes device software functionality, and it is either intended to work as an accessory to a controlled device or to change a mobile device into a controlled medical device (Maaß et al., 2022). Mobile health apps have enabled medical and public health practice through technologies like sensors, smartphones, wireless monitoring devices, and personal digital assistants. Consequently, mobile health apps offer advanced features, such as communication, computing, storage, and processing, making them handheld computers in the present healthcare practice (Ventola, 2014). Maaß et al. (2022) highlighted that medical apps serve medical and clinical functions, and the law can regulate them as mobile medical devices.
There has been a rapid integration of mobile health apps into the healthcare system over the last decades. Ventola (2014) highlighted that Blackberry was the first mobile health app device with computing and communication special features in 2002, followed by Apple's handheld mobile health apps in 2007 and Google Android health apps in 2008, increasing the widespread use of the apps. Nevertheless, Posada (2014) highlighted that in 2014, medical devices with fixed software had been operating for more than twenty years. As a result, developers designed many handheld health apps with varying functions, such as measuring heart rate and monitoring body temperatures, integrating health apps in hospitals, and changing the healthcare outlook. Currently, health apps are significantly becoming user-friendly, smarter, and bearing several functions.
Life science and healthcare companies increasingly manufacture mobile health apps to enhance patient access. According to the IMS Institute of Healthcare Informatics report in 2014, almost 43,700 medical apps were in the Apple store alone, and 54% were genuine healthcare apps (Posada, 2014). Apple reported that one million healthcare professional apps in 2014 were in iTunes Appstore, and the apps had varying subcategories, such as medical education, patient monitoring, imaging, patient education, and nursing (Ventola, 2014). Similarly, after launching a Google Play shop, Google provided varying apps for healthcare workers, increasing mobile health app integration in the healthcare system.
