Question 1
Over the years, there has been research regarding Human immunodeficiency virus infection. One of the outstanding research is “Epigenome-wide epidemiologic studies of human immunodeficiency virus infection, treatment, and disease progression” by Titanji et al., published on January 11, 2022. As the name suggests, this article explains the various progressions in HIV treatment and the process of understanding the improvements that can be conducted in the future. The article highlights that one of the main challenges encountered in the care and treatment of people having the virus is the lack of enough comprehension of disease pathogenesis, which could help boost patient care.
Like most research, this article has highlighted the challenges encountered in HIV research. One of the challenges experienced was the chronic inflammation and biomarkers since they were one of the major pathogenesis and disease drivers among people with HIV (Titanji et al., 2022). The other challenge was that people with HIV were also experiencing non-AIDS-related conditions, which would likely worsen their condition. The other common challenge was HIV infection had the power to modify the host epigenome, thereby affecting the disease progression and molecular processes, causing non-AIDS comorbidities among people with HIV.
The article has highlighted that there have been epidemiologic studies regarding people with HIV infection, progression, and outcomes, even though this research is still at an early stage. For instance, there has been research regarding antiretroviral therapy, which has found out that even though this therapy minimizes HIV replication, it cannot eliminate the virus from the host due to the latently infected immune cells' persistence. This article shows that people with HIV are highly likely to be at risk of chronic kidney disease, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders, and Diabetes mellitus. The article also highlighted the Co-morbid factors and HIV. Some of the factors included smoking, cocaine use, and intravenous drug use. Since the research had some challenges, it gave recommendations regarding the future directions of the
