The diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has increased tremendously and is currently estimated to be at 5.29%. The disease has started evolving into various episodes (Ford-Jones & Christine, 2015). An ADHD advocate for over 50 years, Dr. Kenneth Connors, asserts that the disease has become a worldwide disaster that continues to affect many people. For example, ADHD cases from 1990 to 2013 rose from 600,000 to approximately 3.5 million (Schwarz, 2013). The only primary question that individuals can ask is whether the number of people affected by this disorder comes from a thorough ADHD analysis or a normal behavior encountered by children. However, misdiagnosis of this disorder might only emanate from the failure to obtain correct family history, misconstruing behaviors, miscommunication with clinicians, and linguistic and cultural barriers (Mota-Castillo, 2007). In some cases, ADHD diagnosis might be mistaken from normal childhood behavior, particularly if the doctor does not consider the most critical causal factors. Overall, it is clear that ADHD is usually misdiagnosed on a large scale, where proper testing procedures are not put in place. That is the reason why it might result in an undereducated population, overmedication, and the consideration of normal childhood behaviors. Moreover, the diagnostic and statistical mental disorder manual (DSM) can be used for a thorough diagnosis of the disease.
I have decided to focus on a website known as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). The website gives relevant information about how to handle children and adolescents with ADHD. For example, it portrays that 4% of adults and 11% of school-aged children live with ADHD. These individuals show signs, such as impulsivity and hyperactivity. The website reveals that in a class of 30 children, at least one child has ADHD. In particular, it gives hope to people by informing them that there exist effective treatments, which are accessible to adolescents and children with ADHD. Most importantly, the website has a section of frequently asked questions where individuals can get assistance about how to live with people with ADHD well. Hyperlinks are also present where individuals can get more information about how to deal with ADHD. The website also guides psychiatrists on how to work alongside children with ADHD without offending them.
In particular, the most significant factor when diagnosing ADHD is to understand the early symptoms of the disorder. Sir George Frederick was the first person to describe the disease in 1902, where he emphasized the signs of impulsivity and hyperactivity (Connor, 2011). ADHD has continually been evolving, and it includes the multi-method, multi-informant, morbid conditions, symptoms developmental assessment, social and school functioning, and the course of the illness. As such, the above gives the best outline for testing ADHD. However, the testing process should not be treated lightly. If the physician takes around 15 to 20 minutes evaluating the disorder, the...
