The concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has been on the rise over the past few centuries, and the change has been dramatic in recent decades owing to increased human activities and other ecological changes. The data from Atmospheric Infrared Sounders (AIS) shared by NASA gives a track of Carbon Dioxide concentration in parts per million (ppm) from 2002. The webpage employs a great deal of visualization to portray real-time Carbon Dioxide exposure across the globe. The year 2015 saw the CO2 concentration hit the 401ppm mark, as per the information from AIS (NASA, 2022). Another interesting fact about CO2, as observed from the visual representation, is that its concentration has always been on a steady rise, with a few instances where the concentration remained steady.
CO2 concentration varies from one place to the other depending on several factors. One of the major factors that have been taken into consideration by the AIS report is the altitude, with the report restricting their concentration analysis to altitudes of 1.9 to 8 miles (NASA, 2022). Researchers and theoretical explanations have often associated high altitudes with reduced carbon dioxide concentration. This is attributed to the reduced rates of atmospheric pressure with high altitudes, thus leading to an increased rate of CO2 diffusion to the atmosphere (Midolo et al., 2019). Global geography also plays a significant role in the determination of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. There are strong arguments for the higher CO2 concentration in the northern hemisphere compared to the southern and central hemispheres.
