Introduction of the Species: Spotted Lanternfly

Coursework Instructions:

Follow the requirements in the document and all the sources should be reliable and in APA format.

1. Choose a question that you asked during your Backyard Biodiversity -

Part 1 assignment. If you had a question that was used during the Lesson 2 class participation assignment you need to choose a different question. Make sure that this question is worded so that you can propose a testable hypothesis.

Question: Is the Spotted Lanternfly born looking like this, or has it evolved to look like this?

2. Do an internet search to see if you can find 2 sources that provide evidence-based answers to your question and pass the CRAAP test. The sources can be from secondary or primary literature.

3. Write a 500-word summary of your investigation in paragraph form.

a. Introduce the species you identified, where you identified it, and what you observed about it (make sure to not use inferences here!) [0.5 points]

b. Identify the question you had about your species, based on your observations and explain why you believe this is important to learn more about [0.5 points]

c. Explain the answer to your question using evidence from both of your sources. Write one paragraph for each source. [2 points]

i. Describe the hypothesis each source provides support for (can be the same hypothesis or two different hypotheses)

ii. Explain the evidence that supports the hypothesis

iii. Explain why you believe each of the two sources you have used pass the CRAAP test and are reliable

iv. Use in-text citations when you reference statements, quotes, or evidence from sources

d. Write a conclusion reflecting on how difficult it was to find sources answering this question and what future research you believe should be done to learn more about this topic. [0.25 points]

e. Include a Reference List with the correct APA citations for each of the two sources [0.5 points]

f. Spelling and grammar need to be checked! [0.25 points]

Introduction of the Species
A spotted lanternfly plant-hopper or invasive pest that has spread throughout the United States (U.S.) but is native to Asia, specifically China. I identified the spotted lanternfly on the largest grape tree at home and observed it closely out of curiosity to learn more about it. The organism is easily observable in various settings because it is merely a pest like other common ones. It feeds by extracting sap from the trunks and stems of many plants, especially huge trees. I observed that the spotted lanternfly is a very colorful insect that evolves from an egg into a fully mature individual.
Species Question Identification
Based on the observation, the important question I had about the species (spotted lanternfly) was whether it was born colorful like that or it evolved into specific shapes from a set of stages in its lifecycle. The question arose in my mind, and I had no clear answer or explanation. Therefore, it would be vital to explore more about the species’ evolution to understand how it attains the body shape I observed. Learning more about it is also part of understanding the beautiful yet harmful insect.
Question Answer using the Sources
The source Spotted Lanternfly Lifecycle in Virginia hypothesizes that the spotted lanternfly achieves one generation yearly, and it achieves its spotted appearance procedurally throughout its lifecycle stages. Specifically, according to Day et al. (2019), the insect’s eggs hatch in spring, and the white-spotted black nymphs start feeding. The pest completes four main stages, referred to as instars. The nymphs remain black with white marks in the fir...
