What themes in meditation or Buddhism (that we have talked about in class) does Viola address in this interview?
On page 2, Viola says, In Japan it was beginning to sink in that perhaps art resided in life itself, that as a practice it derives primarily from the quality of experience, depth of thought and devotion of the maker. Question 1
Viola addresses the themes of Samadhi and Prajna. Viola states that his first encounter with Buddhism was at the Buddhist temples. Viola discovered that the serenity of the Buddhist temples and how the image of Buddha’s face is reflected gave him a more profound impression and a better understanding than his objective (learning new art). From the Buddhist perspective, Samadhi involves cognitive development, which results from concentration and meditation. Similarly, an individual only gets wise when their mind is pure and calm; therefore, the Buddhist temple offered Viola a tranquil environment for concentration, meditation, wisdom, and enlightenment to learn new art aspects (Roar, 2004).
