According to David Otley, performance management is a complex communication process that is used by the manager to plan, monitor, and review the performance of an employee or the entire team based on their overall contribution to the organization. It is a continuous and long-term process that helps brands and companies to ensure customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction. The three main types are strategic vs. operational performance management, organizational vs. individual performance management, and external governance vs. internal performance management (Otley, 2008, p. 25).
The strategic vs. operational performance management process involves the strategies and policies implemented by the executive officer to achieve the desired results. It mainly focuses on local issues, incremental improvements and other similar things. Various companies use their balanced scorecards to measure the level of performance of every employee. Norton and Kaplan devised the Balanced Scorecard System years ago with an aim to manage the strategies of an organization comprehensively. An example of this type of performance management system is Boots. They manage their enormous amounts of data using balanced scorecards.
Organizational and individual performance management focuses on how the employees are performing their duties within the office and how the organization, as a whole, is performing. It is easy for the brands to introduce reward systems. This way every company can urge its workers to give their best and to contribute to the welfare and progress of the firm. An example is the National Trust, a conservation organization in England. A few years ago, the company came up with different ideas for improving its customer experience and increasing its income. They started targeting the most brilliant employees and encouraged them to work for extra hours. In return, they were promised to be paid a reasonable amount (Otley, 2008). Soon the company was able to meet its targets, and together with the team, the National Trust expanded its network and became the biggest membership organization in the United Kingdom.
The third type is external governance vs. internal performance management.
