Balancing Ethics with Therapy: Managing Mom

Coursework Instructions:

Please review the Model for Ethical Decision Making: Part 2 resource, the 10-minute video resource related to ensuring the treatment of others with dignity and respect, along with the following scenario from Bailey and Burch (2022, p. 182):
Case 3.04 - Managing Mom
"I am looking for advice on how to manage a parent who constantly discusses her personal life and her other child. She cries and spends 90% of my ABA time talking about things other than my actual client. None of my passive or subtle (and not so subtle) cues have helped. She is a professional in a related field, and I feel as though she is treating me as her sounding board/friend/coparent rather than a BCBA working with her daughter. I do not interact and do not respond to the inappropriate topics. I am feeling uncomfortable and believe that my time is not used appropriately by this client. I'd love some advice on how to get her to be more professional and appropriate to avoid her trying to create a dual relationship."
Utilizing the content of this case scenario, please answer the following questions utilizing part two of your model for ethical decision making:
What solutions have you evaluated for the case scenario?
Describe how you considered the following core principle in evaluating your solutions: treat others with dignity and respect. Include how the resource video helped to inform your solutions you evaluated for the case scenario.
What issues, conflicts, or tensions might potentially influence each solution (include discussion of your biases and personality features as well)?
What do you do if there are no acceptable solutions that the client's mom will agree to uphold? Do you need to go back and brainstorm other possibilities?
If you make a decision, how do you implement it with fidelity?
How and where should you document all actions taken?

Effective and ethical therapy is essential in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Behavior analyzers must balance content-focused interventions and process-oriented service delivery in complex situations. Case 3.04 illustrates how a parent's issues disturb the ABA session. This essay examines ethical and academic answers, highlighting the need to treat people with dignity and respect. Setting clear professional limits, creating a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), and tackling difficulties with empathy and teamwork are suggested. This paper explores various ways to help behavior analysts in similar situations balance ethics with therapy.
Evaluation of Solutions
Set Clear Limits
Open contact with parents can help set professional boundaries. Chadwell et al. (2019) stress the therapeutic interaction in ABA and its process-oriented service delivery. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) video promotes direct problem-solving to safeguard consumers and maintain professional integrity (Behavior Analyst Certification Board, 2020, 01:48). This strategy follows the ethical guideline
