What is the trolley problem? What is the point of thought experiments like it?
The trolley problem refers to a thought experiment in which a person has an ethical dilemma on whether to sacrifice a single person or save a larger group of people when faced with imminent danger. In this example, an individual facing such a dilemma would have two choices to make; steer the trolley out of harm’s ways saving the larger group of people killing a single person, or fail to make a decision and kill the larger group and save a single person. Therefore, the point is to drive the thought process into delving deeper into moral choices that people can be moved to make under certain conditions, thus analyzing the morality of such decisions. People can, therefore, choose to think based on choices made either based on their moral values or the outcomes. Consequently, it raises questions on the justification of specific actions since some actions that cause harm may be permissible in some contexts, while others under different contexts but produce the same outcomes are not acceptable.
What is the “error” that error theorists diagnose in moral objectivism? Explain it as thoroughly as you can
The most significant error that undermines morality lies in the assumption of the presence of objective moral standards that give individuals categorical reasons. Given these two assumptions, both have to be true for morality to stand according to error theorists. Moral objective standards are dependent on a variety of factors hence change with regard to a person’s views on an issue. These categorical reasons brought about by moral objectivity thus apply to an individual even though they do not guarantee the satisfaction of their needs. Consequently, the claim, in this case, is that such bounded requirements of morality cannot be justified hence proving that morality cannot be objective. Error theorists thus believe that moral judgments cannot be accurate based on the above facts
