QUESTION B: What are the bounds of loyalty—can too much loyalty be detrimental? As a commander or civilian leader, where do your loyalties lie if tensions arise…to your team, your boss, your mission, your service, your family, or your personal values? Provide an example to illustrate your position and discern if your situation was an ethical dilemma or a test of integrity.

The Practice of Command – Military Question A The epitome of military leadership, the practice of command, is characteristic of enormous responsibility demanding the ability to exercise effective leadership and management skills while equally embracing and showcasing the qualities of a good leader (Doty, 2012). The command practice involves the lawful exercise of authority over subordinates by rank or assignment in the military services towards ensuring effective, independent, and disciplined mission accomplishment per the mission orders (Swain, 2017). In essence, the main objective of a commander is ensuring mission accomplishment through independent and disciplined execution of the mission orders by the subordinates within the command. Fostering a culture that supports the commander’s objectives within the unit demands establishing genuine relationships and building trust with the subordinates by demonstrating exemplary leadership traits such as professional judgment, competence, and respect for all the officers under the command. Such an approach imparts confidence to the subordinates and reinforces their sense of belonging and belief in the command toward achieving the mission objectives. Captain John Miller stands out as one of the company commanders whose embodiment of exemplary leadership inspired his subordinates and created a sense of duty to achieve the set mission objective of saving Private Ryan during the Second World War (Toner, 2003). Question B             The military is a large force whose cohesion depends on the commanders’ abilities, across the various echelons of command, to independently exercise their initiatives to accomplish the mission as per the superior commanders' intentions and thus preserve the chain of command (Doty, 2012).
