Organic produce and meats promote better health since the consumers who believe in this perception tend to leave a healthier lifestyle. The high affinity for organic food is usually attributed to consumers' health, animal welfare, and environmental concerns. Organic produce is believed to promote better health since they are void of pesticides and fertilizers. Due to a lack of exposure to pesticides in organic products such as fruits and vegetables, there is a synthesis of beneficial secondary plant metabolites such as polyphenolic anti oxides due to high biochemical energy (Winter and Davis, 2006). Unlike conventional food, Organic foods such as apples, grapes, and milk contain higher levels of vitamin c, phenolic acid, and antioxidants (Givens, 2008).
Moreover, the production of organic foods restricts the use of synthetic food additives and irradiation. Increased exposure to pesticides can lead to fertility issues, autism and ADHD in children, and cancer. Organic livestock kept for meat and dairy products are not given any animal byproducts such as antibiotics and growth hormones, which increase the risk of mad cow disease. They are only fed organic feeds and forage. There is a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in organic dairy products, which is essential for human health since it provides energy for forming the membrane and other essential hormones. However, organic foods also contain one-third of pesticides that conventional foods have (Baker, Benbrook, Groth & Benbrook, 2002). Manure used in organic foods production can transfer E. coli to plants and soil, which can remain a threat to human consumers. However, lower exposure translates to lower risk, making organic products more beneficial than conventional products.
The perceptions of society on organic foods are attributed to the growing consumer demand for food safety, animal welfare, and environmental concerns....
